How to Create an Alternate Yahoo ID for Use in Chat Rooms

Your primary Yahoo! Messenger username is linked with your Yahoo! email address. This means that anyone viewing your username from Messenger can contact or potentially discover more information about you. However, Yahoo! has an "Alias" feature which allows you to create a nickname for use in chat rooms or on Yahoo! Messenger. This alias allows others to identify you, but only offers as much information as is contained in the alias name itself.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Yahoo! Messenger and enter your login details.

    • 2

Click "Messenger" at the top of the window and select "My Account Info." You may need to re-enter your login details.

    • 3

Click "Manage Your Yahoo! Aliases" from the Account Settings section.

    • 4

Enter a new alias in the "Aliases" field. When choosing an alias, do not divulge too much information. An alias is designed to reduce the information you provide to the public, not heighten it. As an example, "JaneDoe1988WolfLuvr" tells viewers your name, gender, probable birth year and offers a conversation starter. That's too much information. However, "ILoveWolves" conceals you among the sea of other wolf enthusiasts.

Click "Save" to save your alias. When you enter a Yahoo! chat room, choose "Enter Chat room as" and select the new, cryptic alias.
