How to Deal With a Bullying Boss Who Used to Be Your Co-Worker
For employees to deliver their most optimum output, the organization must provide them with a good working environment. The management must respect them, their work and ideas. When the employees feel valued, they are motivated to attain organizational targets. Working under a bullying boss is a nightmare. Subordinates must tackle such a superior wisely.

Understand the demands of your boss well. As the boss was once your peer; both he and you know each other's strengths and weaknesses. Once you know what he likes and what he doesn't, try to match up to his expectations. If he likes punctuality, try to come to office on time every day. If you are late occasionally, make sure there are legitimate reasons for that.

Demonstrate your capabilities and skills to the boss by your output. If you are delivering superlative output and the boss tries to intimidate you by being overtly picky, explain your view point as calmly as possible. Provide explanations and details on the work you carried out. Still if the boss is not satisfied, offer to mend the work according to his orders and specifications. While doing so, approach him for clarifications on doubts as and when they occur.

Approach the boss if he continues to bully you. You should not be aggressive when you talk to the boss. Choose a time when you know your boss is in a good mood. Meet with privately and tell him that you are keen on improving your performance. Tell him you want constructive criticism from him. When the boss points out your gray areas, there would some points that you would agree with and some that you would differ with.
For the amicable areas, devise a workable plan with your boss. This plan would help eliminate your weaknesses in performance. For all the areas you do not consent with your boss, explain your perspectives peacefully and firmly.

Contact the superior of the boss if the bullying continues. The top management needs to be apprised of the situation. The management would take care of the bully boss. When the management receives several complaints against one individual, it takes strict action against him.
