How to Finger E on a Trumpet

How to Finger E on a Trumpet thumbnail
Learn which valves to press to produce an E note.

B flat trumpets have a range of around three octaves, beginning at the F# below middle C. Trumpet players produce notes by fingering different combinations of valves. The valves you press down to play an E change depending on which of the three E notes within a trumpet's range you wish to play. Playing the lowest E -- just above middle C -- is an ideal starting point for beginner trumpeters. Move onto the two higher E notes when you have mastered the lowest E.

Instructions

    • 1

Produce the lowest E by pressing down the first and second valves with your forefinger and middle finger. The first and second valves are those closest to the trumpet's mouthpiece

    • 2

Produce the E notes one and two octaves above the lowest E by not holding down any valves. This is called open position.

    • 3

Practice playing each type of E note. Play scales or melodies that include E, and practice changing from one E position to the next.

Tips & Warnings

  • Playing in open position can also produce C and G notes. Likewise, pressing down the first and second valves also produces A and high C# notes.
