How to Decoupage Over Formica
Decoupage refers to a method of adorning an item, be it a canvas, table top, mannequin or vase with assorted decorative papers. For example you could use old or new magazine photos, programs from the opera or ballet, sheet music or a range of other items. It's simple way to transform an ordinary object into a fascinating work of art. You can decorate on an artificial material like Formica counter or table, however the key is to just protect your decoupage sufficiently.
Things You'll Need
- Scissors
- Paper towel
- All purpose cleaner
- Pictures
- Decoupage paste
- Foam brush
- Damp sponge
- Polyurethane
- 3-inch nylon brush

Cut out the pictures or other items of your choice. Trim them so they all have neat edges. Spray the Formica surface with all-purpose cleaning spray and wipe it down with a paper towel.

Position the pictures around the Formica surface. Experiment with various designs.

Remove the pictures or other items from the Formica surface. Dip a foam brush in decoupage paste. Apply a thick coat of paste to the Formica surface, using even strokes.

Press the pictures back in place. Wipe away any glue that oozes out with a damp sponge. Allow the pictures to dry for 24 hours.

Dip a 3-inch brush in a coat of polyurethane. Apply a generous coat of polyurethane to the decoupaged Formica. Allow it to dry for 24 hours. Repeat, adding two more coats, allowing them to dry for 25 hours between coats.

Tips & Warnings
If the Formica item is a high-traffic item such as a kitchen table, you will have to add new coats of polyurethane yearly.
