How to Close a Crochet Chain

How to Close a Crochet Chain thumbnail
Close the first chain in a circular crochet project for a neater finish.

A circular crochet project starts with a crochet chain joined into a circle which then becomes the center of the project. Sometimes a hole in the center of the first chain doesn't make very much difference to the appearance of the finished work if, for instance, the hole will be later covered by either a bead or a button. Other times, however, you may wish to close up the hole to give a neater appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Make your chain into a circle by making one slip stitch into the first stitch of the chain.

    • 2

Hold the tail of the yarn so it lies along the top of the chain circle. Work your crochet pattern stitches around the circle, keeping the tail of the yarn close to the crochet chain so you catch it underneath the yarn of each new stitch made around the circle.

    • 3

Complete the first circle of crochet pattern around the chain, then gently pull on the tail of yarn that you caught all around the circle with the crochet pattern stitches. As you pull on the tail, the hole in the center of the circle will close.

Sew in the end of the tail as normal.
