How to Cover Root Underlayer Dye
For most people, underlayer dye jobs do not need as much attention as roots growing from the top of the head. Unless you wear your hair up in a ponytail, have your underlayers showing frequently or you just want the peace of mind, the good news is that touching up your roots doesn't have to cost you a lot of money. Dyeing your roots is something you can do at home in between salon visits. Does this Spark an idea?

Select the appropriate color to match your current dye color. If your hair was lightened previously, do not choose an ash brown, but instead select a neutral or warm brunette. If you are naturally a blond and are going darker, not only will you darken your roots, you can spread the color through to the tips of your hair.

Put on the gloves provided in the dye box, and wear an old t-shirt or drape an old towel around your neck for protection from the hair dye. Mix up the color according to the instructions on the box.

Clip up all of the hair that does not need to be colored, and pin it firmly on the top of your head. Once all hair is in place, you are ready to color your underlayers.

Part the hair behind each ear. Use a parting that curves right along your neck line. Paint the dye on your underlayers, and work the color through from the root to the ends. Leave the color on your hair for as long as the instructions indicate.

Rinse out the color from your hair, and condition your hair with the product provided in the box. Blow dry your hair to see the finished result or wait until your hair is completely dry to style your look.
