How to Become a Male Ballerina
The term "ballerina" refers specifically to females. Many young girls may grow up dreaming of becoming a ballerina. There are, however, also roles available for male ballet dancers and some young boys dream of becoming one. Male ballet dancers are simply called "ballet dancers" and are sometimes referred to as "danseurs," which is French for "dancer." Becoming a professional male ballet dancer takes hard work. Professionals start at a young age and train for years before becoming a professional. If you're interested in becoming a male ballet dancer, be prepared to dedicate yourself to your craft.

1
Start dancing at a young age. Locate a renowned ballet teacher and take lessons. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook, most successful girls begin between five and eight, but boys often begin between the ages of 10 and 15.

2
Practice and stay in shape. Many ballerinas train and rehearse for eight or more hours a day. Dancing requires physical traits such as strength, agility and flexibility. It also requires mental traits such as self discipline, perseverance and patience.

3
Attend a performing arts high school that offers a specialization in dance or ballet. Dancers generally have to audition and receive an invitation to attend these schools. Only the most exceptional ballerinas will be accepted.
-
4
Audition for a dance company or to attend a dance company's training program. The best ballerinas have their first professional auditions by the time they are 17 or 18. It may take several attempts with different dance companies before you are accepted.

5
Enroll in an undergraduate dance program. Professional ballerinas don't necessarily have to attend college, but it may be in your best interest. An undergraduate program provides a well rounded education with coursework in history and the humanities, which will inform your dance. A college degree will also provide you with credentials to fall back on if you don't make it in the competitive world of professional dancing.

6
Keep auditioning and practicing. The only way to make a name for yourself is to continue getting better and performing for the public. Once you've achieved a reputation, better paying and more frequent work can come your way.
