How to Learn About the Legend of Groundhog Day

A groundhog's internal clock is affected by changes in the amount of daylight.

Every year on Feb. 2 people celebrate Groundhog Day. According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil -- one of the most notable and famous groundhogs -- emerges from his burrow and sees his shadow, the winter weather will continue for at least six weeks. Otherwise, spring is right around the corner. Although there are many die-hard Groundhog Day enthusiasts, to some people, the legend and historical origins of Groundhog Day are a mystery. If you would like to learn more about Groundhog day, you can access resources at a local library or online.

Instructions

1. Go to the references section of a local library and ask a librarian to help you locate reference materials about Groundhog Day. Browse through reference books and read about the history and origin of the holiday. You can also ask the librarian to provide a list of online resources.

2. Visit websites specifically dedicated to Groundhog Day, such as the Stormfax Weather Almanac or the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. For example, the Groundhog Club website features an extensive collection of historical information, past weather predictions, videos, photos and more about Punxstawney Phil and Groundhog Day in general.

3. Review historical facts related to Groundhog Day on National Geographic's website. This resource provides insight into the religious and cultural origins of the holiday. You can also view video clips that explain why historians chose the groundhog to help predict the weather.
