How to Adjust the PS3 to Fit Your TV

Sony’s PlayStation 3, or PS3, can output video in a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. The 4:3 setting produces a boxy image, and the 16:9 setting produces a more elongated, cinema screen-like image. The 4:3 aspect is only available in standard definition, or SD, whereas the 16:9 aspect can be obtained in SD and high definition, or HD. If you’re using an older, more boxy-looking television, you should adjust the PS3 output to 4:3 to make the image fit. Likewise, if you’re using a more recent flatscreen, you should make adjustments so the PS3 output is 16:9 and fits the TV.

Choose “Settings” on the PS3, then “Display Settings” and “Video Output Settings.” Press the “X” button. Choose “HDMI” as the “Type of Connector,” if you’re using an HDMI cable. Press the forward arrow button and choose “Automatic.” The output will be automatically set at 16:9 and fit a flatscreen.

Select “Settings” on the PS3, then “Display Settings” and “Video Output Settings.” Press the “X” button. Choose another kind of cable as the “Type of Connector,” if you’re using anything other than HDMI. Follow the prompts to choose the type of output signal; for example, “Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr” in the case of component cables. Press the “X” button.

Choose the resolution supported by the TV. You may find this as part of the model designation, or have to look it up in the documentation. Some settings may not be displayed, depending on the cable used. Choose 720p or higher, and the PS3 image will be adjusted to a 16:9 ratio and fit elongated televisions. Choose “Standard” or “480p,” and a screen will appear for selecting the screen size. Choose the size that matches the TV and press the “X” button to confirm.
