Tutorial on Yellow Dog for PS3
The unofficial Yellow Dog Linux installation is an alternative operating system for your Sony PlayStation 3. When you install an alternative operating system, all of your existing data, including saved games and multimedia will be completely erased and therefore you should proceed with caution. Yellow Dog is a Linux distribution that includes OpenOffice, wireless networking capabilities and all standard Linux features.
Things You'll Need
- Yellow Dog Linux disc
- PlayStation 3 with firmware version 3.15 or earlier
- USB keyboard and mouse

Open "Settings," "System Settings" and "Format Utility" on your PS3. Select "Format Hard Disk" and "Yes."

Select "Custom" partition type, "Allot 10 GB to OtherOS," "Quick Format" and "Yes." Press "X" to restart the system when prompted.

Insert the Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) disc into your PS3. Open "Settings," "System Settings" and "Default System," press "X," select "OtherOS" and then select "Yes."

Type one of the following statements, depending on your TV type (e.g., choose 1080p if you have a 1080p television), and press "Enter."

Click "Next" throughout the installation process; this is the standard installation window and will allow you to configure the OS to your specifications. Leave each option at the default for a basic installation.

Wait for the YDL disc to eject, remove it and close the drive. Complete the end of the setup prcoess by configuring your username.

Tips & Warnings
The original model PlayStation 3 had the capability to install a separate operating system through the OtherOS option (as detailed here). This capability has since been removed on newer models without a modification, which would void your warranty.
