How to Check AT&T Portability
Check whether your existing phone number is portable to AT&T -- in other words, if you can use the number with a new line of AT&T service. Consumers have the right to transfer a phone number within the same local service area, according to the Federal Communications Commission. Check your number's portability online before you begin the process of purchasing your new device and signing a new service contract.

Hover your mouse over the "Shop" tab on the AT&T home page and then over the "Wirless" pane. Click "Transfer My Number" under the "Extras" pane.

Input your existing 10-digit phone number, area code first. Click "Check Eligibility" to check the number's eligibility.

Choose "Shop Now" if you are ready to begin shopping online for new service. Note that porting is not final until you have signed an AT&T service contract, be it online, over the phone or in person, so your number is left intact with your existing carrier in all but the very final stages of the process.
