How to Rig a Jerk Shad

Based on the river herring fish known as a shad, the jerk shad fishing bait is an option for bass fishing. Jerk baits have a long, slender shape that entices larger fish with their jagged motion in the water. The jerk shad baits are soft bodied and made of materials similar to plastic. To tighten the control of your bait, it is best to use a screw-lock hook or other locking hook that keeps the bait in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the hook tip into the front face of the jerk shad bait. Slide the hook down into the body until it reaches the curve in the hook.

    • 2

Curl the hook so that the tip comes back out of the jerk shad about halfway between the mid-belly and the front insertion point.

    • 3

Push the hook down towards the nose of the jerk shad. Twist the bait into the screw-lock hook three full turns to that the bait is secure.

    • 4

Insert the hook tip back into the body of the jerk shad. It should enter the bait under the belly, closer to the tail.

    • 5

Pull the jerk shad lengthwise to make sure the hook is in place. The hook will be hidden inside the body of the bait with just a slight curve of the hook poking out of the back of the bait.
