A properly sized bow tie can accent any outfit.

Whether worn with formal apparel or worn to work in place of a traditional tie, a bow tie is a fashionable men's accessory. While always popular with older men, bow ties are becoming more popular with new generations. Because bow ties are available in a variety of different sizes and colors, personal preference plays a large role in choosing an appropriate bow tie. However, certain rules should be followed for sizing a bow tie. Fortunately, sizing a bow tie is straightforward and does not requires any special skills or tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the neck of the person who will wear the bow tie. Standard bow ties will fit a neck sized from 15 to 17.5 inches. A custom bow tie may be required if the neck size is larger than 17.5 inches. To ensure the bow tie will fit, confirm the maximum neck size the bow tie will fit prior to purchase.

    • 2

Choose a bow tie that will "fit" the body type of the wearer. Big and tall wearers should avoid choosing small bow ties as the bow tie will look extremely small compared to the wearer's body. Similarly, small or average size men should avoid large bow ties as they can make the wearer appear clownish or cartoonish.

    • 3

Select a bow tie that is proportional to the wearer's face. Generally, the ends of the bow tie should fall somewhere between the outside of the face and outer edges of the eyes.
