Straight bars on a bike can be replaced with drop bars.

Installing drop handlebars as a replacement for the straight handlebars that are on your motorcycle is done to change the look of the bike. This can also change the feel of the bike as it is being ridden. The old bars will need to be removed from the bike before you can install the new bars. You will require the proper tools to remove the components that are attached to the handlebars.

  • Towel or cloth
  • Screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Oil-based lubricant

      Cover the gas tank with a towel or cloth to protect it from getting scratched.

      Loosen the screws for the control units on each side of the handlebars by using a screwdriver. Remove the control units and the throttle from the handlebars. Place the control units on the towel over the tank.

      Locate the screws or bolts that are used to secure the mirrors to the handlebars. Remove these by using a screwdriver or a socket wrench.

      Spray an oil-based lubricant on the ends of the handlebar grips. Work the grips off the handlebars.

      Locate the bolts attached to the handlebar mount. Remove these bolts with the socket wrench. Take off the handlebars and set them aside.

      Set the new drop bars on the handlebar mount. Insert the bolts and tighten slightly. Test the fit of the handlebars and adjust as necessary. Fully tighten the bolts.

      Place the grips on the new handlebars, if needed. Place the throttle on the handlebars and tighten the screws. Attach the mirrors to the new bars and secure the control units.
