Producers use MIDI controllers to manipulate external sound sources.

The Akai MPC2000 is an audio production workstation featuring 16 touch-sensitive pads and MIDI connectivity. The E-mu Planet Phatt is a rack mount vintage synth module that contains classic hip hop and R&B drum and bass presets. The Planet Phatt does not contain built-in controls and must be linked to a MIDI controller or sequencer to generate sound. In addition to its vintage synth and drum sound library, the Planet Phatt features frequency filters and modulation effects that are also controllable via MIDI link.
