How to Create Curves With Sheet Metal
Getting sharp, accurate angles into a sheet of metal usually requires a lot of force and special equipment. However, getting a smooth, steady curve is straightforward and is something you can do using simple bits of scrap and basic tools. This is useful for sculpting, cabinet making and roofing projects. Doing this by hand means you will be limited to thinner gauges of metal, especially when you want a continuous curve reaching from one end of the sheet to the other.
Things You'll Need
- Square scaffold pole
- Workbench
- Large metal washer
- Rubber strips
- G-clamps
- Heavy duty pliers

1
Place the scaffold pole along the edge of your workbench with a washer positioned under each end. Clamp the G-clamps firmly over each end of the pole.
-
2
Lay the sheet of metal on the bench behind the scaffold pole. Feed it through the gap between the pole and the bench.

-
3
Feed the sheet through a half an inch at a time. Grip the edges of the sheet metal using the pliers. Use strips of rubber between the pliers' jaws and the metal to provide extra traction.
-
4
Draw the metal towards you and up to bend it against the scaffold pole. Make a bend every inch. Be careful to maintain a smooth bend.
-
5
Stop at the center of the sheet. Withdraw the sheet and insert it the other way around. Continue bending as instructed.
