Change the spark plug on your lawn mower as part of routine maintenance.

Gas-operated lawn mower manufacturers typically recommend that you change the spark plug annually as part of a regular maintenance service to keep the mower in top condition. The spark plug becomes dirty over time from the combustion process, causing carbon deposits that prevent the spark from jumping across the electrodes. The electrodes also wear down from the sparking process, which creates a larger gap and makes the motor difficult to start. Changing the lawn mower spark plug saves time on trying to rectify problems associated with an old and worn spark plug. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the spark plug cable on your lawn mower. Typically, the engine is either top- or side- mounted, so you need to look for the cable on the top or side of the motor. Remove the cable from the top of the spark plug.

    • 2

Position a spark plug socket wrench over the installed spark plug. Turn the wrench counterclockwise to remove the spark plug. Pull the old spark plug out of the wrench and set aside.

    • 3

Use a spark plug feeler gauge to set the electrode gap according to your lawn mower model type. Typically, you slide the feeler gauge in between the electrodes to check and adjust the gap.

    • 4

Insert the new spark plug into the lawn mower motor by turning the socket wrench clockwise. Remove the socket wrench from the spark plug. Reconnect the cable onto the new spark plug.

    • 5

Check that the lawnmower starts in case you need to readjust the electrode gap.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the feeler gauge to lever open the gap, if you need to widen the space between the electrodes.

  • Switch the lawnmower off before changing the spark plug to avoid injury.
