How to Crochet Loosely
Gauge is the measurement of crochet stitches per square inch. Achieving a low gauge will facilitate a loosely crocheted piece of needlework. Loosely crocheted garments are disadvantageous for protection against cold weather. However, advanced needle workers may work towards a loosely crocheted final product to achieve a lace-like visual effect. Loosely crocheted garments are stretchier than their tightly woven counterparts. A loose crochet gauge is also a stylish variation for layering clothes or fashion-forward scarves.

1
Select a hook for the project that will produce a loosely crocheted final product. Large crochet hooks lead to a low gauge because the stitches are bigger and looser. Several systems are in place for measuring crochet hook size. The most commonly used system assigns an alphabet letter to each size; the larger hooks are indicated by letters further along in the order of the alphabet.

Choose yarn that is thin. Yarn thickness is commonly measured with weight. A lower weight indicates a thinner yarn that will produce a loose final product. Selecting a lightweight yarn to be crocheted with a large crochet hook will produce a low gauge.

3
Maintain a consistent tension while crocheting. Avoid pulling the stitches tight to maintain a loosely woven appearance throughout the entire garment. Consistent crocheting is a product of practice, but avoid tight stitches when possible.

4
Make a swatch to practice achieving a low gauge. Swatches are a necessary first step towards following a pattern or creating a garment. Crochet a square that is five stitches by five stitches. Measure with a ruler to determine the gauge and adjust the yarn, hook size and tension as necessary. It is common for less advanced students of crocheting to have stitches that are longer than they are wide; adjust for this tension pattern as necessary.
