How to Do a Snow Scene in Photoshop

Whether or not the weather outside is frightful, you don't need Old Man Winter to make it snow. Use Adobe Photoshop graphics software to paint on your own snow to any image or photograph. Go from a hot beach day to freezing conditions with a few strokes of one of Photoshop's tools, add just a couple of sprinkles to a crisp fall day or make a winter wonderland you won't have to shovel.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Adobe Photoshop and pull down the "File" menu. Click "Open." Browse to an image you want to convert into a snow scene and double-click the name of the file. The picture opens on the Photoshop canvas. If you cannot see the entire picture, click the "Window" menu and select "Fit on Screen."

    • 2

Double-click the "Color Picker," the top-left square -- which may be black by default -- on the bottom of the "Tools" pane. Drag the cursor into the top-left corner of the color box to get a white paint color and click "OK."

    • 3

Click the "Brush" tool, the paintbrush, on the "Tools" pane. Pull down the brush head menu, which is the second drop-down on the toolbar. Choose one of the scattershot brush heads, such as #24 or #39. Slide the "Size" bar to 20.

    • 4

Slide the "Opacity" bar to 75%. Hover the cursor over the picture without clicking. Determine if the snow size looks appropriate and realistic. If not, adjust the "Size" slider.

    • 5

Click and hold down the left mouse button. Drag the cursor around the top of the photo, making it "snow." The more you leave the cursor in the same spot on the picture, the heavier the snowflakes. Keep the mouse button pressed down to pile up snow for snowdrifts and banks. Drag the cursor around the entire image for a blizzard-like look or just around the top for the first sign of a dusting.

    • 6

Click the "File" menu. Select "Save As." Rename the file in the "File name" text box and click the "Save" button.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also create a snow scene from scratch. Instead of opening an existing image, click "File" and "New." Set up your dimensions and use Photoshop's paintbrush and color tools to draw a scene, such as kids sledding, building snowmen or skating on a frozen lake.
