How to Cast Off a Potholder on a Weaving Loom thumbnail
Handwoven potholders make great gifts for Grandma.

After your child has stretched the loops across the loom and woven more loops under and over between them, she will need to cast off the loops to finish the edges of the potholder. If you try to remove the potholder from the loom without making a finished edge, it will fall apart. You child learned the basic principals of weaving by making the potholder. She will learn the basics of crochet by casting it off.

Instructions

    • 1

Stick the small side of the hook that came with the loom through the lowest loop on the right side of the loom.

    • 2

Keep the first loop on the hook and grab the loop above it with the hook.

    • 3

Use the hook to pull the second loop through the first loop.

    • 4

Drop the first loop off the hook and leave the second loop on the hook.

    • 5

Grab the next loop with the hook and pull it through the loop on the hook. Again, drop the old loop off the hook and leave the new one on.

    • 6

Go all the way around the potholder, grabbing loops on the hook and dropping them off in the same way.

    • 7

Pull the last loop out as far as you can and tie a knot in it. This will secure the loops. You can use the last loop to hang the potholder.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may use your fingers to pull the loops on the hook over each other.

  • If the metal hook that came with the loom is lost, use a large crochet hook.
