Chestnuts, according to the famous song, are best when roasted over an open fire. Part of the roasting process involves cracking the shells so the inside can be roasted.   • Small knife
  • Pan
  • 1/4 cup of water

      Carve a small "X" in the flat side of each chestnut. Otherwise, the internal pressure will cause the chestnut to explode.

      Pour the water into a pan. Spread the chestnuts out in the pan.

      Set the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Cook the chestnuts for about 15 minutes, or until they crack open. Let the chestnuts cool slightly. Peel the remaining shell from the nut.
