How to Replace a Line on a Baitcaster

How to Replace a Line on a Baitcaster thumbnail
Baitcasting line is available in a wide range of colors and weights.

Fishing line should be replaced on your bait casting reel at least once per year in order to be certain that the line maintains its performance for each and every one of your fishing trips. This will not only maintain your casting performance, but also will give you an extra level of assurance that when you do hook into a fish that tests the weight limits of your line, you'll be able to bring that trophy home rather than just a fish story.

Instructions

    • 1

Secure the handle of the screwdriver gently in the jaws of the vise with the metal point sticking straight up.

    • 2

Position the spool of fishing line over the metal point of the screwdriver, punching through the paper covering the hole so that the spool rests on the handle of the screwdriver.

    • 3

Thread the end of the fishing line through the guide loop on the bait caster reel, and then through the hole in the center of the reel's spool. Tie the end of the line around the spool.

    • 4

Hold the fishing rod with your dominant hand on the reel's crank. With your other hand, hold the fishing rod and pinch the fishing line between your thumb and forefinger. This will provide enough drag on the fishing line as it is fed to prevent the formation of "bird's nests" in your reel. Pinch the line tighter to increase the drag, or lighter to reduce the drag.

    • 5

Crank the fishing reel's handle to wind the fishing line off the plastic spool and onto the fishing reel spool. Only about 100 yards of line are necessary. You can, however spool all of the fishing line around the reel if you wish.

Tips & Warnings

  • Recycle your fishing line rather than just discarding it in the trash.
