How to Close a File After Editing With Notepad

Windows 7 includes a basic text editor, called Notepad, which is useful for handling plain text documents. In some cases, such as writing HTML code, it is the preferred program because it does not add formatting codes that can interfere with the HTML. Notepad does not have an option to close your document. Instead, closing the document occurs whenever you close the program or choose to open another document.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your text document in Notepad and make any necessary changes.

    • 2

Hold the "Ctrl" button and press "S" to save your changes. Alternatively, click "File" and select "Save As." Enter a new name and press "Save" to avoid overwriting your previous version.

    • 3

Click the "X" at the top right of the Notepad window to close Notepad along with the document. Alternatively, open another document or create a new one. This closes the current text document but keeps Notepad open.
