How to Display a Christening Gown

Preserve an ancestor's christening gown in a shadow box.

Displaying your baby's christening gown lets you share this precious memento with loved ones and family. Unfortunately, improper storage and preparation can lead to premature damage of your baby's special dress. Hanging a christening gown on a dresser, for example, exposes the snowy-white fabric to air pollution, chemicals and other damaging substances. Ensure the longevity and beauty of the christening gown by displaying it in an enclosed case, like a shadow box.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the christening gown with delicate hand soap and cool water to remove any dust or skin oils. A clean gown displays better and lasts longer than one coated with particles.

    • 2

Iron the gown while slightly damp or spritz moisture spray before ironing so your gown hangs with crisp, clean lines and pleats. Hang the gown to dry completely after pressing.

    • 3

Remove the back panel of the shadow box and lay it with the fabric side up on a table or bed. A shadow box with dark satin or velvet backing displays your gown vividly.

    • 4

Lay the gown flat on the velvet backing so the arms extend outward and the skirt splays open. A folded or bunched gown is difficult to pin and displays poorly.

    • 5

Pin the collar, shoulders and wrists to the velvet backing. Smooth the gown flat with your hands after inserting each pin to avoid uneven wrinkling in the fabric.

    • 6

Pin the sides of the torso and skirt against the backing and let the skirt hang freely. Turn the glass side of the shadow box face down on the bed and replace the entire display panel. Flip over the shadow box to confirm proper placement of the gown.

    • 7

Display your shadow box away from direct sunlight and moisture to limit mold and fading.

Tips & Warnings

  • Include other mementos from that day around the periphery of the gown, such as a prayer card or invitation.

  • Never hang your gown in the room where cigarette smoke circulates or your lily white dress will quickly turn musty yellow.

  • Never pin your gown while still damp. Nobody wants to see their christening gown grow mold.
