How to Crochet a Mesh Grocery Bag
Keeping a mesh grocery bag handy is great way to avoid the use of paper or plastic bags when shopping for food. The mesh bag can be rolled and stuffed into a pocket, purse or glove compartment, ready for use on the next trip to the supermarket or farm stand. Although knowing the basics of how to crochet is necessary to make a crocheted mesh bag of your own, the pattern is not complicated. Make the bag from a dark colored worsted weight cotton yarn, found at craft supply or knitting stores, for the best -- and most error-forgiving -- results.
Things You'll Need

1
Pull the yarn strand through a loop of yarn with the crochet hook to make a chain stitch. Repeat, making a length of chain that measures 15 inches long.
-
2
Wrap the yarn strand around the hook and insert the hook into the 4th chain from the hook. Pull the strand through the chain, then immediately pull another strand through the two loops on the chain. Repeat to make a double crochet stitch. Chain four, then skip four chains and double crochet in the next chain. Repeat across the entire row of chains.

3
Chain four, skip four chains and make a double crochet stitch in the top of the next double crochet stitch. Repeat across the entire row. Continue repeating this row until the piece of work is 47 inches long. Knot and cut the yarn at that point.

4
Fold the piece of work in half width-wise. Thread a tapestry needle with a 36-inch length of yarn, then sew up the sides of the mesh grocery bag, leaving the top open. A running whip stitch works well, but any stitch to secure the sides will work.

5
Chain a 36-inch length for the grocery bag drawstring. Thread this drawstring through the top stitches of the bag to complete the project.

Tips & Warnings
Be forgiving of yourself when just beginning, and go slowly. Stitches can always be taken out if you miss a step, and there is no sense getting frustrated early on. Take your time and you'll be amazed how quickly you improve.
