How to Customize Adium

Adium is a multi-client instant messaging application for Mac OS X. Adium allows users to simultaneously connect to over 15 instant messaging networks including Facebook Chat, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and AIM. The largest benefit of Adium is the ability to completely customize the application to a user's liking. Adium allows for users to create plug-ins and add-ons to completely change the look of the client as well as add additional functionality. Installing these customizations is fairly simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Finder" icon in the Dock, open "Applications" and double-click "Adium" to launch the instant messaging application.

    • 2

Open your Web browser and navigate to the Adium Xtras web site (see Resources).

    • 3

Browse for the desired customization. The Adium Xtras site is a collection of user-submitted customization options including buddy list styles, message styles, sound sets and plug-ins.

    • 4

Click the "Install" link for the desired add-on. The add-on is automatically installed in Adium. If you are prompted to allow the browser to open Adium, select "OK."

    • 5

Open Adium, select "Preferences" from the menu bar to further configure the selected add-on. Repeat the process for additional customizations and add-ons.
