Skype is a VoIP client that allows you to make calls to regular telephones as well as other Skype customers. There are options that allow you to video conference, instant message and group video conference. There are applications for cell phones as well as personal computers so it can be an option for business as well as personal use. Skype also allows you to place and receive calls without using video.

Instructions

      Tap the Ubuntu symbol in the upper left corner of your desktop to launch the Applications menu and enter "Skype" in the search bar. When the application comes up, click on it to launch Skype.

      Click the Skype icon in the lower left corner of the contact window list to show the menu and select "Options." Click on "Sound Devices" and push the "Make a test sound" button. If you hear the sound, you know your speakers are working and configured correctly. Push the "Make a test call" button and follow the instructions in the call. If you hear your voice recorded in the call, you know your microphone is working and configured correctly. Most of the time, microphones and speakers work without changing any settings.

      Click on a contact's name on your list that shows as online and click on the green call button with the icon of a phone to initiate a call. Allow the other person to answer the call. Whether or not you can see the other person's video, talk. The microphone and speakers still work. The same is true if the other person cannot see your video.

      Press the red button with the phone icon on it to end the call when you are ready.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your microphone or speakers do not work when you test them, click the speaker icon in your system tray and select "Sound Preferences." Click on the Input tab to make sure your microphone is not muted and the sound bar is registering input sounds. Click on the Output tab to make sure your speakers are not muted and to check for your master volume control, as well as Skype volume control.
