How Do I Machine Quilt a Border?
While the center of the quilt is focal point, the border acts as a frame. Once you have finished blocking the center, you will be ready to put on the border. Using a machine can make this go much faster. A sewing machine can also help keep stitch sizes identical, giving the quilt a professional look. The easiest border to add to your quilt will be a straight border, or simply creating a square that borders the block. When you feel more comfortable, there are many other ways to create intricate borders.

1
Measure fabric and cut out strips in the dimensions that you want the border to be.
-
2
Pin the strips to the sides of the quilt with the right sides facing each other.
-
-
3
Thread and place the same color bobbin in your sewing machine.
-
4
Use a walking foot to create a straight line, sewing the strips in place. Since you are allowing the machine to guide you, the feed dogs should be up.
-
5
Pin the last two strips to the top and bottom of the quilt. Do not overlap the side borders.
-
6
Sew the last two strips into place, including the small sections where the side and top and bottom strips meet.
