Instructions

    • 1

Pour 2 oz. of Scotch into a brandy snifter.

    • 2

Nose the Scotch. This ritual is similar to nosing a fine glass of wine. Swirl the Scotch around the glass three or four times. Place your nose about 12 inches from the glass and inhale the aromas. Repeat as desired.

    • 3

Add water to the Scotch. There are varying points of view as to how much water you should add. Some people suggest a 1/2 tsp. while others suggest adding equal parts. However, no matter the amount, the consensus is that the water should be distilled and at room temperature.

    • 4

Repeat the swirling and nosing process. As these two ingredients combine, the Scotch and water will release different aromas from the ethyl alcohol that is being released. Inhale and enjoy the aromas.

    • 5

Sip the Scotch. The Scotch should be sipped in small amounts, such as 3/4 to 1 tsp.

    • 6

Allow the Scotch to rest on the tongue for several seconds. Refrain from swishing or chortling as you might do with wine.

    • 7

Swallow the Scotch slowly, imagining a large "bell-shaped" curve as you do. The notes of the flavor within the Scotch will rise, peak and then decline. Repeat, until you have finished consuming the beverage.

Tips & Warnings

  • Other Scotch purists feel as if Scotch should be consumed "neat." This means that the Scotch is poured into a glass and consumed without water or ice.

  • Some people enjoy Scotch on the rocks, which means Scotch poured over several cubes of ice.

  • A popular drink in Spain, Scotch is often mixed with cola and poured over ice cubes.
