Sooner or later, everyone needs to back their small motorboat; just watch for "propeller walk."

From Quick Guide: All About Boat Motors
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 Pair Boat Shoes
  • 1 Approved Life Jackets
  • Motorboats
  1. Step 1

Start the motor using proper procedures. (See related eHow.)

  2. Step 2

Instruct passengers to seat themselves, unless they're assisting your departure from a spot where sitting is impossible.

  3. Step 3

Set the throttle to the idle position.

  4. Step 4

    Center the outboard motor.

  5. Step 5

    Shift to reverse.

  6. Step 6

Observe the boat's reaction. Propellers often "walk" the boat to one side or the other, making it impossible to back up in a straight line.

  7. Step 7

Adjust the motor's angle to compensate for propeller walk if necessary.

  8. Step 8

Add throttle as necessary to increase speed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid speeding in reverse. It's easier to loose control going backwards.

on 11/22/2005 Try to watch for any pillars and watch the front of the boat as well as the rear as you back into your parking zone.
