How to Back a Motorboat Using an Outboard Motor
Sooner or later, everyone needs to back their small motorboat; just watch for "propeller walk."
Instructions
-
-
1
Start the motor using proper procedures. (See related eHow.)
-
2
Instruct passengers to seat themselves, unless they're assisting your departure from a spot where sitting is impossible.
-
-
3
Set the throttle to the idle position.
-
4
Center the outboard motor.
-
5
Shift to reverse.
-
6
Observe the boat's reaction. Propellers often "walk" the boat to one side or the other, making it impossible to back up in a straight line.
-
7
Adjust the motor's angle to compensate for propeller walk if necessary.
-
8
Add throttle as necessary to increase speed.

Tips & Warnings
Avoid speeding in reverse. It's easier to loose control going backwards.

Try to watch for any pillars and watch the front of the boat as well as the rear as you back into your parking zone. -
