How to Use a Maya Tie

A ring sling can help you hold your baby hands-free.

Ring slings allow you to carry your baby hands-free with ease. They are popular with parents because they can be easily adjusted to fit multiple wearers. If you have purchased the Maya Tie ring sling, also called the Maya Wrap, knowing how to thread it through the rings and correctly position your baby can make wearing the sling easier and more comfortable, too.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the Maya Wrap's tag. This will likely be under the rings near the shoulder area.

    • 2

Place the Maya Wrap on the floor, tag side up. Spread out the fabric so that it is not twisted anywhere.

    • 3

Fold the tail end. The tail end of the wrap is the end that is opposite the rings. To fold like an accordion, fold about two inches of the fabric lengthwise and then fold the next two inches of fabric in the opposite direction. When you are finished, the folded tail should look somewhat like an accordion.

    • 4

Thread the folded tail through both rings and then under only the bottom ring.

    • 5

Turn the sling right side out, and put it over your shoulder. Either shoulder will work, but you might find that the opposite shoulder of your dominant hand works best. For instance, if you are right handed, put the sling over your left shoulder.

    • 6

Place the baby in the sling, her stomach facing your stomach, with her head poking out. Her bottom should be in the sling. If your baby is older than three months, you can let her feet dangle out of the bottom of the sling, but younger babies will need more support, so keep their feet in the sling.

    • 7

Tighten the sling to make it secure around the baby. Pull on the tail to tighten the sling. As you tighten, try to keep the rings near your shoulder. Having the rings as close to your shoulder as possible will help ease the strain on your back.

Tips & Warnings

  • New Maya Wraps come with a DVD with instructions, so check your packaging for the DVD to learn how to correctly use your ring sling. The DVD will also give you multiple ways to carry your baby.

  • Infant deaths with ring slings prompted the Consumer Products Safety Commission to publish warnings about the use of ring slings. While none of these deaths is associated with the Maya Wrap, make sure that fabric does not block the infant's mouth or nose. Also, the baby should be in an upright position, and her chin should not be touching her neck.
