How to Reinstall Grub After a Windows Install in Ubuntu
Installing both Windows and Ubuntu Linux on a computer (also referred to as "dual booting") is a convenient and cost effective way to learn about two operating systems, however, if you install Windows after installing Ubuntu you may lose access to the Ubuntu installation. Fortunately the Ubuntu install CD also works as a "Live CD" that will boot the computer into Ubuntu from disc and access tools that can resolve the problem. Fix the Ubuntu "Grub" bootloader using the Ubuntu Live CD command prompt to restore the Grub bootloader configuration.

Power up the computer and insert the Ubuntu Live CD disc into the CD/DVD drive. Power down and the power up the computer.

Use the "Arrow" keys on the keyboard to navigate to the language you prefer in the menu that appears and press the "Enter" key.

Use the "Arrow" keys on the keyboard to highlight the "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer" menu option. Press the "Enter" key.

Press the "Enter" key if prompted for a username and password. Click the "Applications" menu on the Ubuntu Dash bar and click "Accessories," then click "Terminal." A command line terminal window will appear.

Type "sudo grub" at the command prompt and press the "Enter" key. Type "root (hd0,0)" at the command prompt and press the "Enter" key. Type "setup (hd0)" on the command line and press the "Enter" key.

Enter "exit" on the command line and press the "Enter" key.
