How to Synchronize Hotmail Subfolders in Thunderbird

Many Hotmail users access and send email using the website rather than an email program. Email clients such as Mozilla Thunderbird, though, allow you to keep copies of your messages on your local machine and compose emails without having to log in to the Hotmail site. Many Thunderbird users use the POP3 protocol with Hotmail, which allows them to send and receive email message through Hotmail with relative ease. However, POP3 does not support the powerful folder creation and sorting features that Hotmail offers. If you want to synchronize your Hotmail and Thunderbird folders without having to add a folder or sorting rule each time you make changes to your web client account, you should use the IMAP protocol routed through a third-party server.

Instructions

  1. Configure Thunderbird

    • 3

Click "Email Account," then the "Continue" button. Type your Hotmail username and email address in the corresponding fields, then click "Continue."

    • 4

Click "IMAP" in list of connection option. Type "in.izymail.com" in the "IMAP Server" field. Enable the "Use Global Inbox (store mail in Local Folders)" option. Click the "Continue" button.

    • 5

Type your Hotmail account username in the "Incoming User Name" text box. Type a descriptive name for the new Thunderbird email account, then click "Continue."

    • 6

Review the settings, then click "Finish." Click "Server Settings" under the new Hotmail account header in the Thunderbird program window. Enter "142" in the "IMAP Port" field, then set the "Require SSL" option to "No." Click "Apply," then "OK."

    • 7

Click "Get Mail" on the Thunderbird toolbar. The first time that Thunderbird retrieves messages from your Hotmail account, it also downloads folder names from your webmail client and creates corresponding folders in your Inbox. After Thunderbird downloads folders and messages, it syncs with the Hotmail webmail client. Thunderbird moves, saves and deletes messages on the Hotmail server as needed to match the actions taken in the desktop program. If you log in to Hotmail, all folders and messages should appear as they do in Thunderbird.
