How to Remove the Barrel Nut on a WASR

The WASR is a Romanian clone of the AK47 assault rifle. For civilian use, all WASR variants are semi-automatic-only, as opposed to having fully-automatic firing capability. The most popular chambering for this rifle is the 7.62x39 Russian round. Some WASR rifles have a nut at the end of the muzzle that protects the muzzle's threads. The nut is spot-welded on to prevent easy removal. This makes the gun compliant with Assault Weapon Ban rules. This nut may be removed, but only if an approved, legal flash-hider is installed in its place.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the magazine. Retract the bolt and ensure the chamber is clear of live ammunition.

    • 2

Use the Dremel Tool with a cutoff wheel attachment to grind away the spot-weld on the nut at the end of the muzzle. The spot weld is usually on the underside of the barrel. Do not cut too far and nick the threads.

    • 3

Use the flat-blade screwdriver to depress the spring-loaded pin that locks into the detent on the barrel nut.

    • 4

Use the pliers to unscrew the barrel nut. The threads are left-hand thread, so turn the nut clockwise to unscrew it.

    • 5

Replace the barrel nut with an approved flash hider.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check state and local laws regarding the removal of the barrel nut for this weapon. Replace the nut with an approved flash hider. Failure to do so renders the rifle an assault rifle under the Assault Weapons Ban. This is a federal crime.
