How to Create Threaded Labels in Gmail

Applying labels to your email in Gmail can help you categorize the messages you receive and send. Labels will then appear beside each email's subject in your inbox, allowing you to identify the categories of each message at a glance. Gmail also offers the option to create threaded labels, allowing you to group similar labels under a parent label for more efficient categorizing.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on "More," found right under the list of all your labels in the sidebar, on the left of the main Gmail window; then click "Create new label."

    • 2

Enter the name of your desired parent label in the text field labeled "Please enter a new label name," then click "Create."

    • 3

Click on "More," then "Create new label" once again.

    • 4

Enter the desired name of your first child label in the text field, then select your desired parent label from the drop-down menu labeled "Nest label under." Click "Create."

    • 5

Repeat this process with all parent and child labels you wish to create.

Tips & Warnings

  • To nest labels that already exist, click on the colored box found to the right of the label name in the list of labels on the left of the main Gmail window; select "Edit," then select a label from the "Nest label under" drop-down menu, as usual.
