How to Make Lines Inline in PageMaker
PageMaker was the original desktop-publishing software application, or "killer app," that made the Apple Macintosh computer a sensation. PageMaker came out for Windows and kept at the top of the DTP field for a while. Others, however, took over as the leaders because PageMaker failed to innovate quickly. For example, while others introduced anchored objects---a newer term for "inline"---PageMaker did not allow for it with lines. However, there are some ways around the problem.

1
Determine the inline location where you want to place a line. This means, select the section of text that you want the line to stay with as you edit and move text later.
-
2
Choose the type of line you want to insert inline. Your choices will be more limited than if you could use PageMaker's "Line" tool. You will be able to use the "Shift" with the "Underline" key, the dash key or the equal sign key for horizontal lines. You can use the "Shift" key plus the forward slash key for a short vertical line or the forward or backward-slash keys for diagonal lines.

3
Use the key combination you chose to create the type of line you want inline with the text. From that point onward, whatever line you chose will move with the text as if it was an anchored object.

4
Use PageMaker's "Underline" function if you want to have a line directly under a word, group of words or a paragraph. Select the text with your mouse, then move to the "Type" menu and click "Underline." To place lines above or below a paragraph, go to the "Type" menu and click "Paragraph." You will have two choices, of which you can choose both or one or the other. The choices will be "Rule Below Paragraph" and "Rule Above Paragraph." After you make your choice, you can set the line width and style. This will give you more options for how you want the lines to look than using lines on keys. However, it only will work at the top and bottom of paragraphs. The lines will stay with the paragraph if you move the text.

Tips & Warnings
You cannot use PageMaker's "Line" tool to create inline lines. If you place a line drawn with the "Line" tool anywhere on your page, it will stay there and not move along when you change the text. If you use lines this way, you will need to manually move each one if your text flow changes. Note that it is possible to use inline graphics such as pictures or graphs that stay with the text where you place them, but this does not work for lines or other shapes you create in PageMaker.
