How to Lacquer an Object
Lacquer is a clear coating applied to the surfaces of an object to give a glossy, polished quality. It is mostly applied on wood products, such as furniture, small wooden crafts and hardwood floors. In all cases, a well-applied coating of lacquer not only protects the surface of the object, but gives it a beautiful, professional finish. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Medium-grain sandpaper
- Fine-grain sandpaper
- Fine brush no larger than 1-inch thick
- Soft cloths
- Ammonia-based cleaner
- Steel wool

Clean the surface of the object you wish to lacquer. Use an ammonia-based cleaner and wipe off all traces of dirt, grease and oil on the object.

Sand down all surfaces using the medium-grain sandpaper. When finished, rub the object down with fine-grained sandpaper to make sure all surfaces are smooth and even.

Wipe the object with a damp small cloth to remove all the dust from the sanding process.

Dip half of the brush into the lacquer and remove any excess. Carefully cover all sides of the object with a think coat, making sure that no one area is painted twice. Apply the lacquer slowly and in smooth strokes.

Wait 2 hours for the first coat to dry. Buff the surfaces with steel wool to remove any dust, bugs, or small particles that may have clung to the surface.

Continue to apply coats of lacquer to the surface until the desired look is achieved.

Buff the final coat with a soft cloth.

Tips & Warnings
Cover with tape beforehand any areas that you do not want to be lacquered. Be aware of cheap lacquers, for they can be of very poor quality.
Work in a well-ventilated area, as lacquers may contain VOCs.
