Weave colored strings into friendship bracelets.

Learning to weave string is a good way to design friendship bracelets and necklaces out of embroidery floss. The embroidery floss is a colored string that comes in a skein of about 8 yards. Weaving and knotting patterns are used to design colorful friendship bracelets out of the thin string. Creating woven string projects is a fun and simple craft to teach children. They can make woven jewelry to trade and share with their friends.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut four different colored strands of embroidery floss at equal length. You will need around 25 inches for a bracelet design. You will need at least 75 inches for a necklace, depending on how large you need it.

    • 2

Hold all the strands evenly and make a loop at the top with all the strands. Pull the ends through to make a knot. Leave at least 1 1/2 inches of strands above the knot. Tape the knot to a flat surface, such as a table or desk, with a piece of masking tape. This will hold the project in place while you work with the strands.

    • 3

Take your far left strand and loop it over the strand next to it. Pull the end through the loop to make a knot and tighten it. Loop it around the same strand again and make a second knot.

    • 4

Loop the same strand around the next strand twice, making two knots on that strand. Loop the strand around the last strand on the right, using the same technique to make two knots again. Now that strand will be hanging on the far left when you finished the row.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 with each strand until the bracelet is as long as you need it to be. You will see a diagonal-line pattern forming as you go.

    • 6

Divide your strands in two sections. Twist two of the strands together. Make a double knot at the bottom of the strands. Take your next two strands and twist them together. Tie a knot at the bottom to secure it. Repeat with the strands at the top of the bracelet. You will use those long strands to tie on your bracelet.

Tips & Warnings

  • More than four colored strands can be used to create a wider design. Add beads to the ends for another design element.
