How to Crochet in a Hoop Earring

Crochet inside a hoop earring with a steel crochet hook.

Fill the center of hoop earrings to add a new dimension to the open area. Thin crochet cotton, pearl cotton or embroidery floss add color to the open space. A small crochet hook is necessary to create the delicate crochet pattern. The simplest way to crochet around a hoop earring is to begin around the outside edge and work toward the center. Create an open looking spiderweb type look using a double crochet. Work the same pattern in any size hoop earring by changing crochet hook sizes and adding or subtracting the amount of rows stitched.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie a slipknot approximately 1-inch from the end of the pearl cotton. Place the slipknot over the end of the crochet hook.

    • 2

Hold the pearl cotton on the outside edge of a hoop earring. Insert the end of the crochet hook through the middle of the hoop. Loop the pearl cotton around the crochet hook. Pull the loop through the two loops on the shaft of the crochet hook. Repeat the process around the outside of the hoop until the entire hoop is covered.

    • 3

Chain 3 stitches. This is the first double crochet and chain stitch of the next row.

    • 4

Double crochet in the second stitch. Chain 1 stitch. Repeat the pattern around the entire hoop earring. Slip stitch the last chain 1 stitch to the second chain stitch creating the first double crochet of the row.

    • 5

Chain 3 stitches. Double crochet in the second opening created by the chain stitch of the previous row. Chain one stitch. Double crochet in the next opening. Chain one stitch. Repeat the pattern to complete the row. Slip stitch the last stitch to the second chain of the chain 3 stitch that began the row. Repeat the pattern to the center of the hoop.

Note: When completed correctly, two double crochet stitches are side by side then one opening is skipped.

    • 6

Chain one stitch. Insert the crochet hook into the next stitch and through the stitch directly across. Loop the pearl cotton over the hook. Pull the loop through the two stitches. Repeat twice. Chain 1 stitch.

    • 7

Loop the pearl cotton over the hook. Pull the loop through the chain stitch. Cut the pearl cotton approximately 2 inches from the crochet hook. Pull the end of the pearl cotton through the loop. Pull tightly to form a knot.

    • 8

Cut the two ends of pearl cotton approximately 1/16-inch from the knot.
