How to Optimize QoS Settings for an M1000 Router

Similar to most other routers, the Actiontec M1000 modular DSL router features the "Quality of Service" mechanism. QoS is often used in routers to prioritize and regulate network packet traffic, allowing an entire IP range or a number of programs to receive more expedient and reliable network service. In some cases, QoS can also be used to keep users and programs from consuming large amounts of bandwidth. Optimizing these settings on the M1000 is a relatively straightforward process.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to the Actiontec M1000's configuration page. Enter the router's default username and password when prompted.

    • 2

Click the "Advanced Setup" icon at the top of the page. Scroll down and click the "IP QoS Settings Upstream" link under "QoS."

    • 3

Check the box next to "Enable IP QoS." Enter the name of the application or computer being managed by the new QoS rule into the "Name" text field. Enter the port range, the protocol used for the ports (TCP or UDP) and the traffic priority. Click "Add" to add the new rule to the list, and then click "Apply" to save your settings.

    • 4

Click the "IP QoS Settings Downstream" link under "QoS." Repeat the above procedure and click "Apply" to save your settings.
