How to Board a Small Motorboat

A little care is all it takes to get yourself safely into your motorboat.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Decide whether you want to board from the bow or over the gunwale.

  2. Step 2

    Bring the boat up to the dock, either at the bow or the gunwale.

  3. Step 3

    Place any gear you might have on the dock until you're in the boat.

  4. Step 4

    Put one hand on the gunwale or bow. This will help steady the boat as you step in.

  5. Step 5

    Put one foot into the boat. Try to step as close to the centerline as possible.

  6. Step 6

    Step in with your other foot.

Tips & Warnings
  • In most cases, the boat will react less severely to your weight if you board over the bow.
