How to Send DTMF Tones in Skype

How to Send DTMF Tones in Skype thumbnail
Skype has an in-call keypad to send DTMF tones for extensions or voicemail menus.

DTMF, or Dual Tone Multiple Frequencies, tones are produced by pressing the keypad of a touchtone phone. They are often used to connect to an extension when calling a business or when navigating through an automated attendant menu system. If you call a landline phone with Skype, a free Internet voice, video and text chat program, and need to send DTMF tones, Skype has a pop-up keypad to send the tones.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Skype. Click the green "Call" button beneath a contact with a landline or mobile phone, or click "Call Phones" beneath the Contact List and dial the phone number on the dialing keypad.

    • 2

Click the "Keypad" icon on the "Call" toolbar after the call connects.

    • 3

Click the numbers on the keyboard with the mouse to send DTMF tones when prompted. Alternately, you can enter the numbers with the numeric keypad on your computer keyboard.

    • 4

Click the "Keypad" icon on the "Call" toolbar to minimize the keypad when you have sent the DTMF tones and continue your call.

Tips & Warnings

  • Skype requires a subscription or the purchase of Skype Credit to call landline or mobile phones.

  • The dialing keypad does not send DTMF tones. Only the keypad on the "Call" toolbar will send the tones.
