How to Make a Pipe Delimited File in Gnumeric

Gnumeric is a spreadsheet used by the GNOME desktop environment, which is free and open-source software available for download at Projects.Gnome.org. Gnumeric can create a pipe-delimited text file. Pipe-delimited files separate each field of data by a "|." Delimited files are used to import and export data to and from databases, software programs and Web applications. The type of software that you are migrating data to designates which type of delimiter to use. While the comma is the most common delimiter, the pipe is frequently used for Linux and Web applications.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the first cell that want to input data in.

    • 2

Type your data into the cell. Separate each piece of information with a "|." For example, a row, called a record, of contact data looks like "first_name|last_name|address_1|address_2|city|state|zip_code|phone|email."

    • 3

Press enter on your keyboard to move down one cell.

    • 4

Repeat steps two and three until all of your data is entered.

    • 5

Click "Save As" from the "File" menu. Enter a "File Location," "File Name" and select ".txt" for the "File Format." This makes the Gnumeric spreadsheet a file delimited by pipes.
