How to Read a Probe Gauge
A probe gauge, also known as a dial gauge or indicator, is an instrument commonly used to measure small linear distances. Millwrights often use this tool when working with metal parts of machinery. To read a probe gauge, or dial indicator, it is important to understand the small dial and large dial on the gauge. A larger dial is used to measure in .001-inch increments and the smaller dial shows a single revolution of the larger dial in .100. Does this Spark an idea?

3
Read the dials while you are measuring an item. If the small dial is sitting on the 5 and the large dial is on the 70, then the measurement would be 0.570-inch. If the small dial is pointing to the 6 and the large dial on the 10, then the measurement is 0.610-inch.
