How to Properly Grip a Dart

Darts are gripped near the center of their shaft.

Gripping a dart properly is essential for success when playing against your buddies or in competition. A major positive to the game, according to Nice Darts, is that there is no hard and fast way to grip a dart. Gripping technique is up to the discretion of the dart holder. While this is true, several important tips must be considered to ensure your grip produces maximum effectiveness.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the dart's balance point. Do this by opening your hand and balancing the dart across your palm. Feel the weight of the dart to locate its center of gravity. Holding the dart at its balance point -- usually the textured metal band wrapped around its center -- is ideal for throwing speed and accuracy.

    • 2

Grip the dart naturally. Pick up the dart by the textured metal band, and hold it in the way that feels most intuitive for you. This might be a five-fingered grip, for example,or a grip with only with the index, middle finger and thumb, if this feels more natural.

    • 3

Hold the dart with moderate pressure. Think of the pressure as commensurate to holding a corn chip. Holding on too tight will crush the chip, while a grip that is too light will result in the chip falling to the floor.

    • 4

Pull open any fingers that are not naturally involved in the grip. Keep these open fingers relaxed, off the shaft and away from the tip. Avoid curling fingers into your palm, as this can lead to muscle spasms and tension, both of which will negatively impact your throw.

    • 5

Aim the dart tip slightly upwards. A slight upward angle helps to account for the natural downward arc of the dart upon its release.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep darts away from children.

  • Never throw darts with people in your line of fire.
