How Can I Fix My Computer Redirecting Me to Another Site?

Although your computer's Web browser automatically sends or redirects you to one website from certain others based on coding parameters within the original website, it is possible to put an end to these redirects by adjusting your browser's options. Disable the browser from redirecting you to avoid inadvertent navigation to malicious, pornographic or otherwise undesirable content that can transmit viruses and spyware onto your computer, even if its protected.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the "Tools" menu, which displays as a drop-down if you use Internet Explorer or Firefox. Click "Internet Options" within Internet Explorer or "Options" within Firefox.

    • 2

Select the "Security" tab if you use Internet Explorer. If you use Firefox, select the "Advanced" tab.

    • 3

Click next to "Disable" under the "Allow Metarefresh" option in Internet Explorer. Un-tick the box next to "Automatic Redirection" within Firefox.

    • 4

Click "OK" and close out of all browser windows. Re-launch the browser to activate settings. Unless you re-enable redirects in the future, they will no longer occur.

Tips & Warnings

  • Google Chrome doesn't allow you to disable redirects as of July 2011, so if redirects are a frequent problem for you, consider using a different browser.
