How to Dye a Feather White
Adding feathers to your crafts and other decorating creations can help create a whimsical and airy look and vary the texture of a piece. If you can't find feathers matching your ideal shade of white, try dyeing them yourself. If done correctly, this cost-effective method is uncomplicated and can be accomplished in very little time.
Things You'll Need
- Rubber gloves
- 1 quart very hot water (about 140 degrees)
- Woolite soft cleanser
- Stirring spoon
- 3 tsp. Rit white powder dye
- Large plastic container
- Feathers
- Towel
Instructions
-
-
1
Wear rubber gloves to keep from staining your skin with the dye mixture and to protect your hands from the hot water.
-
2
Wash feathers in a mixture of Woolite soft cleanser and warm water to help break down their natural water repellent quality. Gently towel-dry the feathers and set them aside.
-
-
3
Blend 1 quart of very hot water and 3 tsp. of Rit white powder dye in a plastic container large enough to hold the feathers you are dyeing.
-
4
Place feathers into the dye solution and allow them to rest for 2 to 5 minutes. Stir occasionally and check the color frequently.
-
5
Remove feathers once you have achieved the desired shade of white. The color will appear slightly darker when wet.
-
6
Rinse feathers carefully in warm water and spread them on a dry towel to air dry.
