How to Calculate Hours Worked Including Minutes

Most companies will calculate time worked in hours such as 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., but some companies pay their employee's for hours and minutes, such as 8 hours and 33 minutes. If you work for a company that calculates your time worked and pay by hours and minutes worked, you need to know how the time is calculated to arrive at your gross pay.

Look at your time card. If you punch in with a time clock, you will see the hour and minute that you are punching onto the card. For instance, if you are starting work at 5:00 a.m., you will see 05:00 a.m. or military time 0500 on the time card after it is punched. If you punch out for that day at 3:32 p.m., you will see 3:32 p.m. or 1532 for military hours.

Add up the hours and minutes worked. If you punch in at 05:00 and out at 3:32 for three days, you would have 10 hours and 32 minutes a day for three days, which equals 30.96 hours. If you punched in at 6:00 and out at 3:13 for two days, you would have 9 hours and 13 minutes a day for the last two days for a total of 18.26.

Add the hours together without the minutes. 30 plus 18 equals 48 hours.

    • 4

Add the minutes together without the hours. 96 plus 26 equals 122 minutes. There are 60 minutes in one hour. Change the minutes into hours by dividing 122 by 60 (122 divided by 60 equals 2 hours and 2 minutes).

Add 48 hours in step 3 together with 2 hours and 2 minutes in step 4, for a total of 50 hours and 2 minutes.
