How to Back a Keelboat Using an Outboard Motor

Motoring a sailboat in reverse isn't easy, but it's often necessary.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Start the motor using proper procedures. (See "How to Start a Keelboat Outboard Motor.")

  2. Step 2

Instruct passengers to seat themselves, unless they are assisting your departure from a spot where sitting is impossible.

  3. Step 3

Set the throttle to the idle position.

  4. Step 4

Center the rudder and the outboard motor if it is free to turn.

  5. Step 5

    Shift to reverse.

  6. Step 6

Observe the boat's reaction. Propellers often "walk" the boat to one side or the other, making it impossible to back up in a straight line.

  7. Step 7

Adjust the motor's angle to compensate for propeller walk if necessary.

  8. Step 8

Adjust the rudder if the motor doesn't turn.

  9. Step 9

Add throttle as necessary to increase speed.

  10. Step 10

Leave the rudder centered, and use the motor to turn if you have a choice. Use the motor and rudder together to reduce your turning radius - although many times that isn't an option.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use the motor to turn at slow speeds.
  • As speed increases, the rudder may become more difficult to control, especially during sharper turns.
