Minimize the possibility of mishaps by negotiating around your boat properly.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Avoid leaving the cockpit unless necessary.

  2. Step 2

Put on an approved personal flotation device (PFD). Everyone should wear a PFD while onboard a boat. PFDs are especially important outside the cockpit.

  3. Step 3

Bend your knees slightly when you're moving around the deck. This helps you react to unexpected movement.

  4. Step 4

Locate secure handholds in every part of the boat you plan to visit. Always use one hand to keep yourself attached to the boat.

  5. Step 5

Prepare to kneel or sit at the first sign of excessive boat movement.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always try to move on the high side of a boat that's heeled-over.
  • In times of deteriorating weather, short-handed sailing or reduced visibility, you may want to wear a harness and tether to remain attached to the deck.
